Why I supported TEDx Chania

My journal

To start with, I need to emphasise on how much every professional, in just about any field, has to find time and effort, and give back to the community they practice their business in, and not just expect to receive ALL THE TIME.

With this in mind I try to find and help with my profession, individuals or groups, that strive, work hard and have a vision. My job then is to help that vision become audio, visual, or both.

I can either photograph, capture a film or simply guide in the best way that I have learned thus far.

TEDx Chania approached me with the need of photographic coverage of their speakers. Being the low season of my work I had the time and my only concern was if I committed to them, how committed were they at the event.

Not being their first year they had a proven background so I accepted. I became a media sponsor and very glad I did so.

A grand team of young talent and hard workers put together an independently hosted TED event of a super high level.

The theme was “Xenos” “The foreign” “The foreigner” that we all fear or avoid.

This can be found in inside ourselves, in our everyday lives, in our work habits or in the people that risk their lives on a small boat for a better future.

Some of the highlights of the event for me were:

  • The great food, coffee, drinks and more.
  • The life vest from a child that lost its life from Syria to Lesvos, given by one of the speakers to the organizers.
  • The reason why most foreigners (Tourists) choose to come back to Greece, and that is due to the human element that has remained human, even after such a hard economic blow.
  • The musical presentation of Passe PARTout songs accompanied by sign language.
  • The mannequin challenge at the end of the presentations with a guy sitting upside down on his head!
  • Did I mention the food coffee, drinks and more?

Below are a few images that highlight my day at TEDx Chania as their photographer.

Behind The Scenes of a commercial lifestyle photo shoot in Chania Crete, Greece
I was recently approached to commercially photo shoot for a new clothing company here in Chania, Crete Greece. The newly formed company called Rice Above Fear is based in the UK and owned by a young Greek form Chania. The company wanted a youthful photo shoot with a lifestyle approach. Just the kind of stuff I love. The photo shoot was done in two parts. Day one in the studio for the products and day two outdoors around town by a lake and finally on the beach. Putting together a good crew and models was essential. I always want to be efficient on set, but if we can’t have a good time in the process then why bother. The result i ...

24h escape to the South of Crete in Paleochora
It all happened mid week, 75 min away in less than 24hours in September. Paleohora in the South of Crete is our favourite destination "get-away".  Amazing beaches, great food and family atmosphere. And all that can be arranged within one stop. Just drive up to the "Palm Tree" and you are done. Perrakis family takes care of the rest. Rooms, food and tones of smiles. We have always loved hanging out there from our single days up to now as a family. Andreas, one of the three brothers has been a buddy of mine since my cycling days and now we both enjoy time together as dads. If that ain't proof of friendship longevity I don't know wha ...
