Winter walk around Chania with some unexpected surprises.

My journal

Western Crete and the town of Chania is best known as a Summer destination. With its amazing beaches, enjoyable nightlife, food for the entire family and leisure and safe environment.

But during Winter, life doesn’t stop for us locals living here throughout the entire year.

And when as a family we want to take a stroll downtown, after work, in the middle of the holidays, this is what Chania looks like.

December 26th 2017. The day after Christmas. The day Santa Run takes place. Lots of fun and with many people dressed as Santa. Everywhere you go, you end up seeing groups of red-dressed festive participants.

The Venetian harbor now mostly shut down, has some cafes and restaurants still open.

The best part of the evening was the play for children we ran into by mistake. It happened to start just as we walked by the Mediterranean Center of Architecture. A theatrical play with storytelling for children. They portrayed and told the story of two Kalikantzarakia. Actually very pleasant for us adults too.

And just outside the city of Chania, CAM and the University of Crete had created an animation on the wall of the opposing Neorio.

This turned into an evening playground after the play.

All in all a great Tuesday evening walk.

Q & A with filming / editing mini workshop with cinematographer Hector Torra in Chania Crete, Greece.
A while back I had the chance to attend a workshop that helped change my perspective on some core personal and professional aspects in my photography.   Best of all I had a chance to make some good friends that I now also call part of my network. One of them is Hector Torra. A cinematographer from Spain with a spirit and humor similar to myself.   Hector and his girlfriend, the lovely Carolina came to Crete to visit the island and spend some time together. While here we had a chance to talk shop and try to find ways to potentially work together. In my opinion it is just a matter of time. In the mean while I asked Hect ...

Visiting “The Big Blue” of Amorgos Greece
The island of Amorgos has been on my bucket list since 1988 when the movie, The Big Blue first came out. A few years earlier my family had moved from the States to my mothers island of Lesvos then later to Crete. The movies’ cinematography and music simply revoked all the positive of the island live in Greece. Walking up the steps to the monastery of Chozoviotisa then swimming in the crystal clear waters just bellow Saint Anna was as if living in Luc Besson’s majestic film. Doing this with my family was even better. Both my wife and daughter loved the place. And my personal expectations were also met. The waters were as blue as I ha ...

Yes, Crete even has a few lakes
Believe it or not, the island of Crete known for its award-winning beaches has a few lakes. One of them just 15 min drive from the city center of Chania in the area of Agia. And that is actually the name of the lake. Penelope and I took a short day trip and enjoyed nature together with the lakes ducks and geese. When on the island perhaps lake Agia should be on your radar of visits.
