Summer Family Trip to the Aegean Island of Folegandros

My journal

A Hidden Gem in the Aegean

Folegandros is one of those dream Cycladic islands nestled in the Aegean Sea that belongs on every traveler’s bucket list. Just as beautiful as Santorini and Mykonos, yet blissfully free from the overwhelming crowds, it has managed to preserve its authenticity while offering a touch of refined living. The island’s beaches remain unspoiled—many without organized chairs or umbrellas—allowing the natural beauty of the landscape to shine through.

Small enough to explore in less than a week but never dull, Folegandros offers a perfect balance of relaxation and discovery. From charming boutique hotels to luxurious five-star stays, the island caters to every traveler seeking a genuine Greek island experience.

The Journey from Crete to Folegandros

Our family adventure began in Chania, Crete. We drove to the port of Heraklion to catch the fast ferry to Santorini, where we transferred to a smaller boat bound for Folegandros. The journey itself was part of the experience—crossing the Aegean, watching the islands appear on the horizon, and feeling the anticipation build as we approached this lesser-known Cycladic treasure.

The Heart of Folegandros

Folegandros is defined by its dramatic cliffs and serene atmosphere. The island even boasts its own Caldera-like cliff, offering breathtaking views of the Aegean. At the highest point of the main village, Chora, stands the stunning Monastery of Panagia. Each evening, the setting sun bathes the monastery in golden light, creating a scene that soothes the soul and captures the essence of the Greek islands.

Reaching the monastery can be done by walking up the winding stairs or, as in our case, by taking a donkey ride—a highlight for the children and a charming nod to traditional island life.

Capturing Folegandros Through the Lens

As a travel photographer to the Cycladic island of Folegandros, this trip was a dream come true. The island’s textures, colors, and light are a playground for creativity. Every corner of Chora, every stretch of coastline, and every sunset offered a new perspective to capture.

Bringing along a film camera added a special dimension to the experience. The analogue feel of film photography brings out the timeless character of Folegandros—the grain, the tones, and the imperfections that make each frame unique. Alongside my film shots, I also captured digital images, drone footage, and a short video clip to showcase the island’s beauty from every angle.

A Family Adventure to Remember

Traveling as a family made this journey even more meaningful. Watching the kids marvel at the cliffs, laugh during the donkey ride, and play on the quiet beaches reminded us why travel is so powerful—it connects generations through shared wonder.

Folegandros offered everything a family could wish for: tranquility, authenticity, and a touch of adventure. It’s a place that invites slow exploration, heartfelt connection, and endless inspiration for anyone passionate about photography and travel.

Final Thoughts

Folegandros is a Cycladic island that captures the heart. It’s a destination where simplicity meets elegance, where every sunset feels personal, and where a travel photographer can find endless stories to tell. For those seeking an authentic Greek island experience away from the crowds, Folegandros is a journey worth taking—and one that stays with you long after you leave its shores.

Chania Crete photographer, images from Epiphany Day in Chalepa and Apokoronas.
Epiphany Day is the ceremony were an Orthodox priest throws a cross into the water and swimmers race to retrieve it. Similar ceremonies to mark Epiphany Day were held across Greece at the sea, rivers, lakes and dams. The swimmer, with the cross then goes around town and collects money in exchange for a blessing. This was a family day for us as for many others. We chose to watch the cross thrown into Koloura cove in Chalepa, Chania then spend the day and have lunch at the wonderful Tzitzikas cafe restaurant in Armenous, Chania Crete Greece.   ..

Aromas, flavors, bazars and history around Istanbul Turkey (Part 1)
A couple of flights away from Chania, Crete Greece we ended up in Sultanahmet Istanbul. As you fly in over Istanbul, you are reminded that this is a city of over 12 million people. In search of a short trip near Chania, my family and I decided to spend a few days exploring the wonders and as much history as possible. Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, Galata tower, Taksim square just to name a few. This is my “warm up” post before I manage to edit and share some more of the images I captured during our trip. Stand by for part 2 and thanks for visiting.
