A Family Photo Journey: From the Dazzling Heights of Dubai to the Tropical Bliss of Mauritius

My journal
Introduction

A journey that combined the futuristic energy of Dubai with the tranquil beauty of Mauritius became an unforgettable family adventure. As a travel photographer, capturing the essence of both destinations through the lens was a dream come true. Traveling with Anna and our daughter Penelope, this trip offered a unique contrast between two worlds—one built on ambition and innovation, the other shaped by nature and serenity.

Dubai: The Desert Metropolis

Dubai stands as a marvel of modern architecture and ambition, a city that has risen from the desert to become a global hub of luxury and innovation. The skyline is dominated by towering skyscrapers, enormous malls, and architectural wonders that seem to defy gravity. Despite visiting in winter, the heat was relentless, making air-conditioned spaces and shaded areas essential.

The city’s energy is unmatched—every corner offers something new, from gourmet dining to futuristic attractions. Yet beneath the glittering surface lies a culture deeply rooted in tradition and faith, offering a fascinating contrast to the Western influences that shape much of the city’s lifestyle.

The highlight of our stay in Dubai was a day tour into the inland deserts. The golden dunes stretched endlessly, creating a photographer’s paradise. We rode camels, explored the sands on dune buggies, and experienced the thrill of 4×4 jeep rides across the rolling terrain. As the sun set, we gathered under desert tents for a traditional meal, surrounded by the stillness of the desert night—a moment that perfectly captured the spirit of adventure and discovery.

Mauritius: A Tropical Paradise

After the intensity of Dubai, Mauritius felt like stepping into another world. Nestled in the Indian Ocean, this island paradise offered a slower pace and a deep connection to nature. The lush tropical forests, turquoise waters, and vibrant marine life created a setting that felt almost dreamlike.

Our stay at a beachfront five-star resort was pure bliss. With coconut palms swaying between the pool and the ocean, every sunrise and sunset became a perfect photo opportunity. For a travel photographer, Mauritius is a canvas of color and light—each moment offering a new perspective on paradise.

A week on the island allowed time to explore its many wonders: cascading waterfalls, rum distilleries, and wildlife sanctuaries. But the most unforgettable experience was a boat trip beyond the reef to swim with wild dolphins. These were not trained or captive animals, but free dolphins in their natural habitat. The boat followed their path, and when the moment came, we jumped into the Indian Ocean. The encounter was breathtaking—coming eye to eye with dolphins as they glided gracefully through the water. On the same trip, we spotted humpback whales with their calves and even stingrays gliding beneath the waves.

A Journey of Contrasts

This trip was more than just a vacation—it was a study in contrasts. Dubai dazzled with its modernity, ambition, and human-made wonders, while Mauritius offered peace, authenticity, and the raw beauty of nature. Together, they created a balance that reflected the diversity of the world and the joy of exploring it as a family.

For a travel photographer, Dubai and Mauritius provided endless inspiration—from the golden hues of desert sunsets to the deep blues of the Indian Ocean. For Anna, Penelope, and me, it was a journey that blended adventure, relaxation, and unforgettable memories.

Family time in the Canary Islands
The best time is family time. The best family time is when we get to travel. As a family we place great value into travel. We as individuals love it and when we can we try to pass this on to our little girl Penelope.Traveling with a child is not that easy but compared to others with many kids I can’t complain. Penelope handles the planes, the layovers, the car rentals and the mixed cuisines with charm and ease. Visiting the Canary Island this past November was no exception. We all had the time of our lives. And how couldn’t we. It was November and we were at Lanzarote hanging out on the beach sun bathing! This was part two of m ...

Chania Crete photographer, images from Epiphany Day in Chalepa and Apokoronas.
Epiphany Day is the ceremony were an Orthodox priest throws a cross into the water and swimmers race to retrieve it. Similar ceremonies to mark Epiphany Day were held across Greece at the sea, rivers, lakes and dams. The swimmer, with the cross then goes around town and collects money in exchange for a blessing. This was a family day for us as for many others. We chose to watch the cross thrown into Koloura cove in Chalepa, Chania then spend the day and have lunch at the wonderful Tzitzikas cafe restaurant in Armenous, Chania Crete Greece.   ..

Why I supported TEDx Chania
To start with, I need to emphasise on how much every professional, in just about any field, has to find time and effort, and give back to the community they practice their business in, and not just expect to receive ALL THE TIME.   With this in mind I try to find and help with my profession, individuals or groups, that strive, work hard and have a vision. My job then is to help that vision become audio, visual, or both. I can either photograph, capture a film or simply guide in the best way that I have learned thus far. TEDx Chania approached me with the need of photographic coverage of their speakers. Being the low season of ...
