A holiday photo walk around Chania Crete.

My journal

Walking around the town of Chania near the end of the year one gets a chance to live some of the traditions here in Greece.

First thing you will notice and feel is that Christmas isn’t as big of a deal as it is in other parts of the world. Here in Greece Easter is more celebrated and way more festive. Still the spirit is out there and people have a good time.

Another noticeable and pleasant aspect is the weather. Especially here on Crete, if you want bellow zero temperatures you will have to drive up into the mountains and due to the high altitude (up to 2453m) even see some snow.

But down at sea level temperatures rarely drop into the single digits in Celsius.

Also note in the pictures the main difference in Greek tradition is the decoration of a boat rather than a tree. You see, back in the days, in Greece, the gifts were brought to the children in boats, since that was the main way of transportation for all the numerous islands and seaside towns and villages.

Not that people don’t decorate trees in their homes, but it is always nice to see a light covered boat from time to time.

Merry Christmas and a happy new year everyone.

Aromas, flavors, bazars and history around Istanbul Turkey (Part 1)
A couple of flights away from Chania, Crete Greece we ended up in Sultanahmet Istanbul. As you fly in over Istanbul, you are reminded that this is a city of over 12 million people. In search of a short trip near Chania, my family and I decided to spend a few days exploring the wonders and as much history as possible. Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, Galata tower, Taksim square just to name a few. This is my “warm up” post before I manage to edit and share some more of the images I captured during our trip. Stand by for part 2 and thanks for visiting.

Yes, Crete even has a few lakes
Believe it or not, the island of Crete known for its award-winning beaches has a few lakes. One of them just 15 min drive from the city center of Chania in the area of Agia. And that is actually the name of the lake. Penelope and I took a short day trip and enjoyed nature together with the lakes ducks and geese. When on the island perhaps lake Agia should be on your radar of visits.

24h escape to the South of Crete in Paleochora
It all happened mid week, 75 min away in less than 24hours in September. Paleohora in the South of Crete is our favourite destination "get-away".  Amazing beaches, great food and family atmosphere. And all that can be arranged within one stop. Just drive up to the "Palm Tree" and you are done. Perrakis family takes care of the rest. Rooms, food and tones of smiles. We have always loved hanging out there from our single days up to now as a family. Andreas, one of the three brothers has been a buddy of mine since my cycling days and now we both enjoy time together as dads. If that ain't proof of friendship longevity I don't know wha ...
